so, soul companion currently grants bonus action dice... in a system that does not have action dice... this is a problem.
so, any ideas?
possibly have it reduce the cost/boost the duration of shikai/bankai (the meta-ability, not the indivual ones) from the top of my head, or have it function as an intelligent weapon?

The latter sounds better to me. Int/Wis/Cha based on its owner's, then something X+Int skill points. No granted powers or the like, just mental attributes, skill points, and maybe acting on its own. Trigger an ability, or something, for the last.

right, so, lets see...
Soul Companion the shinigami is much closer than normal to his zanpaktuo, and as a result is capable of heeding its advice in combat
the shinigami's zanpakuto is an intelligent weapon with the following properties.
The zanpakuto's mental attributes have the same values as the wielder, though they can be applied to different stats. The zanpakutos's reatsu modifier is the same as the owners. The zanpakuto does not have its own SEP pool, and instead uses the wielders. the weapon has 4 + int modifier skill points, and may select any 6 skills to be class skills, and has sight and hearing out to 60ft. The zanpakuto is capable of communicating telepathically with the wielder.
A number of times per day equal to the zanpakuto's reiatsu modifier, the zanpakuto can activate a single zanpakuto ability available to it, or activate Shikai/bankai if it possesses those abilities. for the purpose of the SEP limit, the zanpakuto counts as a character 1/2 the level of its wielder.
the zanpakuto's alignment is within one step of the shinigami and an ego score equal to the shinigami's character level. The shinigami never has a conflict of ego when wielding his own zanpakuto
thoughts/feelings/death threats?
