not against max HP. I'm against shinigami having more defences than everyone else and no, as stated a collosal creature gets no bonuses from size. they get a bonus from their leveling when using the "advancing a monster rule" and increasing in size that way. as the rulebook dosen't say the menos uses that rule (just that it changes size) it technically dosen't. and if it does, then adjuchas would be weaker in comparison due to loosing all that strength/con. the problem is more DnD's "bigger is better, but bookworm beats all" mentality than the power of the NPC class at every size other than Menos \ I actually agreed with the Adjucha keeping the size bonuses but losing the penalties cause it made sense, they were still just as powerful as Menos, taking away that strength bonus means a level 8 Shinigami can take down a menos (which should not be possible since only those that were captains or on the level of captains were supposed to be able to do that)

again, fluff and rules must balance. if there are menos at level 8, level 8 characters must be able to combat them (well, a party of level 8s, but you get the gist)

It's CR, not HD that determine exp an 8 HD menos is likely CR 12 due to it being colossal, with the high strength, the long reach attacks, and it's Cero, plus it has abilities like swallow whole which no level 8 is gonna beat that grapple check (which is a standard action) Balance is one thing, but really, this is actually well within the ability of the system to both keep the balance and keep in true with the source material.
heck, a level 12 can't beat a colossal creatures grapple due to the bonuses, but a level 12 can escape easier than a level 8, by cutting their way out.
Also, I took us way off topic here. Sorry about that.

Meh, it does bare mentioning.
Personally I would just like to point out that the Captains don't just wack a Menos into submission, they either kill it in one blow or use what amounts to hit and run tactics (dodging, backing away, ranged attacks, etc)

Note: Soi Fon is a Captain that would not be able to kill a Menos in one hit when using her Shikai. And I'm going to rule that it's ok you guys got off topic. This is healthy discussion. Well, except for Shirokiba's grammar issues, but I'll make an exception this time.
